Support for the construction of a community house for tourism and neighborhood support

Location: Luang Prabang, Laos
Local project partner: direct help

Following the successful reconstruction of their own home, the family we support in Luang Prabang successfully completed another project: the construction of a small community house on their property – a place for connection and neighborhood support.

The project was designed with sustainability in mind. Today, tourists are welcomed at the completed community house to experience traditional Baci ceremonies and take part in communal cooking evenings. These authentic encounters provide the family with fair income. At the same time, neighboring families are actively involved by helping with cooking, cleaning and hosting. This has created not only an additional source of income for the family but also a strong sense of solidarity that benefits the entire community.

In addition, a guest room with a private bathroom was built on the upper floor and is now rented out to visitors. This provides the family with a long-term and stable source of income, a form of private retirement provision, while also strengthening the village community. In Laos, one of the poorest countries in the world, there is neither a public pension system nor social security for the population. Projects like this therefore play an important role in sustainably improving the living conditions of individual families.

The family had already invested all their savings and completed about two-thirds of the construction when rising material costs threatened the successful completion of the project. With a grant of 8,900 USD from the Tarek Mamisch Foundation, the construction could be completed and the community house successfully finalized.

Amount of funding in 2025: 8,900 USD
