Community House

Support for the construction of a community house for tourism and neighborhood support

Location: Luang Prabang, Laos
Local project partner: direct help

Following the successful reconstruction of their own home, the family we support in Luang Prabang has embarked on another project: the construction of a small community house on their property – a place for connection and neighborhood support.

The concept is designed to be sustainable: in the future, tourists will be welcomed there to experience traditional Baci ceremonies and take part in communal cooking evenings – an authentic experience for which the family receives fair compensation. At the same time, neighboring families are actively involved by helping with cooking, cleaning, and hosting. This not only creates an additional source of income for the family itself but also builds a spirit of solidarity that benefits the entire community.

In addition, a guest room with a private bathroom is being built on the upper floor and will be rented out to visitors. This project provides the family with a long-term and stable source of income – a kind of private retirement plan – while also strengthening the village community. In Laos, one of the poorest countries in the world, there is neither a public pension system nor social security for the population. Projects like this therefore play an important role in sustainably improving the living conditions of individual families.

The family had already invested all their savings and completed about two-thirds of the construction when rising material costs threatened to endanger the project. With a grant of 8,900 USD from the Tarek Mamisch Foundation, the continuation and completion of the building could be secured.

Amount of funding in 2025: 8,900 US-Dollars
